Chapter 10

Matt stumbled out of his room, holding his head, eyes crusty and throat parched. He made it all the way to the staircase before his burst of energy faded and he slumped against the nearby wall, grateful for its cold – if unyielding – mercy.

That was where Colombia found him, head lolling back, breathing slowly and half-asleep again. His mind was still foggy, every thought a piercing lightning bolt that ran through his awareness and repeated the same mantra – he was not well.

“Lord Fang!” Colombia dropped down next to him, placing a hand on his forehead. Matt admired the hand, amused a little by how weather-worn it was. Not the soft, gentle hand of a noble lady, but tough like a farmer’s or outside worker’s. The entire thing led to feathers that came off the back of the forearm and arm, small and longer feathers that shifted and moved with each adjustment she made next to him. “You’re awake!”

“Of course, I am,” Matt said. “I just… drank too much.”

“Drank too much, my lord?”

“From celebrating our victory. I really should have known better than to do so without Irvine’s hangover cure.” He noticed her growing concern, suspicion pursing his lips. “I didn’t?”

“It’s been four days since you were attacked. Five since the victory.”

“What!?”

“You have been unconscious for four days, my lord. The day after the celebration, you met with the opposition in the desert using my technique. Somehow – and we do not know how – he managed to attack you.”

“I thought you said it was safe!”

“Everything that I felt about it said it was.” Colombia hung her head low in shame.

Matt fumed for a moment, but he was too tired and exhausted to be truly angry. There was no tutorial, no details about how to do things or what rules existed and what could be broken. Instead, all they had were intuition that was sometimes wrong and past experience.

“Alright, alright. I get it. Don’t trust the system.” Forcing his head up, he looked at the stairs that led to the tower and groaned. “You’re going to have to help me up.”

“My lord?”

“Up the stairs. To the table. Strategy room. War room. Whatever.”

“No, my lord. It’s more…” Colombia hopped back on her clawed feet, waved her wing-hands up and down, and gestured. “I do not think that is wise. I had trouble enough lifting you to wash you.”

“Wash. Me.”

“And change you. There were… accidents.”

“Stop, stop.” Matt was blushing now, both at the thought of what he might have done while unconscious and also at having it cleaned up by women. Why, exactly, were nurses female? Then again, would it be better to have a male nurse?

Step right up, choose your form of embarrassment with a side of homophobia and misogyny or patriarchy. If you reach really hard, you might even get just plain old foolishness.

“Not as though I liked it,” Colombia muttered under her breath. That only made him blush even harder and the pair fell into an uncomfortable silence.
